Blogging dangers, the dangers and disadvantages of personal blogging and blogging as a career. And how you can eliminate or minimize them.
Several thousands of blogs are being set up on a daily basis either for personal use, to make extra income from home or full time income.
This is because blogs are easy to set up and maintain. And comes with a lot of benefits compared to a website .
But just like every good things in life there are disadvantages associated with blogging and it even can be dangerous if caution is not applied where necessary.
People usually keep personal blogs to relieve themselves of the stress or burdens of the day. It's like the invisible friend you can always pour out your heart to.
Even when this is therapeutic for some people, there are dangers in blogging this way since these bloggers usually hold nothing back.
They talk about everything they did during the day including everything that happened at work.
If you are considering starting a personal blog you should be very careful about what you discuss on it.
There has been a lot of negative issues associated with personal blogging. From cyberstalking,to losing the chance of securing a job after an interview and even getting fired.
One of the common blogging dangers of keeping a personal blog is what is known as cyberstalking.
When people keep personal blogs they are never careful about the information they share. When you visit some people's blog, it's as if you already know them.
They share information from their names and spouses names to the names of all their children. Photos and videos of all family members. Residential address of family members, place of work, restaurants where they have lunch e.t.c.
These are too many information to share with strangers.
Even when all these are done with good intentions, what about those reading it?
You could suddenly become a victim of cyberstalking. Perhaps just for the way you looked, or something you said. This is especially common with the females who keep personal blogs.
If you're someone seeking a job but have a personal blog you use as a dairy and confession booth, where you say everything you feel and think, then you want to be careful.
Don't say something implicating because all the information you publish on a blog can be easily accessed by anyone with a computer connected to the internet.
Future employers tend to do some research about applicants they are considering for a job opportunity and if your name turns up to be one of the personal blog owners, that could ruin your chance of getting the job.
Employers are careful not to employ someone who would start revealing the inside issues of their company on a blog.
Stories abound of employees losing their jobs over something they said in a post on their blog or the way they said it.
Without intending to, private blogs can go public. People have been sued and are still being sued for contents they and their readers posted.
Some people are very private persons publicly. So instead of gisting and socializing with others publicly, they would rather sit with the computer and pour everything bothering them out in writing.
This is not bad if no one get hurts.
But when doing this they could get carried away and say something about the behavior of a colleague at work or even worse the employer.
Even when what you say doesn't sound bad and wasn't done with bad intentions, it could be misinterpreted by your commentators and the person concerned.
The word 'getting dooced' was coined after the owner of dooce.com (Heather Armstrong) got fired after complaining about the job she does on her blog.
The most popular of such cases is that of Mark Jen. And that is because he was an employee of the big Google search engines, until he got fired two days after posting about the sales conference of Google on his blog.
Though he removed it when he was asked to, but when you have said something it can't be taken back.
Blogs lasts forever. Most search engines including Google store cached data of old content which will remain available even after you remove a blog.
So anything you don't want spreading about, better don't say it or use it online.
No matter how established a blog gets, it can not be left completely to run itself, not if you want to sustain your income or improve it.
Everyone's dream is to build a business that can eventually run itself with close to zero work from you, at least that is my dream. But this is not possible with blogging.
Blogs need regular updates to sustain and get more audience. When all you live on is your blogging income, if you stop posting, the income you have built over the years can drastically reduce. This is one of the very common blogging dangers though not limited to bloggers alone. As long as you're always facing your computer screen for several hours you could suffer from poor eye sight.
At times I sit straight facing my laptop screen for up to 12 hours writing and publishing content. This result in aches inside my eyes.
If this keeps up it could result in very poor eye sight.
Sitting for several hours using the computer for blogging always result in back and buttocks aches. And at times general body pain.
If you should keep a personal blog edit the personal information you share on your blog. Or don't keep an online profile.
Post anonymously.
Stay off discussions concerning your work. You never know when you will make a funny joke about a colleague or the boss that would be misunderstood.
In general whether you keep a personal blog or a business blog, be careful with the way you use your words because once it's out you can never take it back.
If you wish to become an online Infopreneur (publishing content online on a topic you love) and build profitable business doing it, consider building a theme-based content site instead.
It's more focus and rewarding than blogging. Read how here (link opens on another window).
Update:
What if you can build a blog like a theme-based content site and unlike the usual system of blogging where you have to keep updating to improve your blog income you can set up your content pages so that searchers can find your content .
Whether or not you update your blog regularly doesn't matter you'll still get good number of people coming to your blog. And where there are many people with one interest, opportunity to make money is endless.
Blogging is actually very interesting. It's one of the best ways you can decide to make money from home for the simple fact that it comes with a sense of self fulfillment.
Knowing you are providing information that helps people improve themselves whether financially or otherwise makes you feel useful, worthy, and gives you a sense of fulfillment.
What brings more joy than helping others achieve their dreams and goals and earning a good living in the process?

For your eyes, you can either reduce the light from your computer screen. Or work away from your computer screen every few hours.
Another option my eldest brother recently suggested to me is to use a high tech phone like Nokia N70 where you do some of your work using your phone while lying down.
You can type your posts in your phone and later transfer to your laptop and post on your blog.
And you can also use the phone completely to do some tasks, like check and reply to emails, login into facebook, your blog dashboard and so on.
When you start feeling body aches, your body is telling you to take a break. So obey it.
Get up, take a work around the house or play with the kids or friends for say an hour and come back to your work.
If you can't afford to do that, then change your sitting position. You can put your laptop on your lap and relax your back across a chair.
Finally when doing business online be careful not to go over board slandering other peoples names and/or products.
Keeping in mind these tips on how to minimize blogging dangers and disadvantages of blogging will help us blog without any consequences.
