Why check your backlinks?
It's good to check the inbound and outbound links of your site for the following reasons:

- Compare the ratio of your inbound links verse outbound links.

1000 backlinks from low-quality sites is same as 10 backlinks from quality sites.
The fact that search engines look at the number of links to a site to rank it doesn't mean you should get links any and everywhere.
The information you find from backlinks analyzer will tell you how you're doing in this aspect, not that you control sites linking to you.
But you'll know what is happening and find a way to minimize it (assuming you discover that lots of low-quality sites are linking to you).

Where you generate your backlinks and how you create the link tells on the quality of the link.
Do you use the keyword for your site or page you want to rank in creating the backlink to your site or that page?
This is important. And analyzing your backlinks tells you how you're doing on this.
Number of No-follow inbound links
This is very important. A no-follow tag in a link tells the search engines not to follow that link. So if many of your links have no-follow tags then your backlinks will not help your pages much.
Another important area is in reciprocal linking.
Some people after exchanging links with you, go back to add a no-follow tag to it.
You wouldn't know this otherwise if you don't check your backlinks once a while.
Pagerank of Sites linking to you
Pagerank used to be important in judging the popularity of a site but I think that is about to change as Google hasn't updated page ranks for some time now.
People are coming to the conclusion that Google no longer pay attention to the page rank of a site, though Google is yet to officially say this.
So this doesn't have much importance but it doesn't hurt either.
Ratio of Inbound backlinks
The natural thinking is that if you offer real value through your articles, there should be more people linking to your site than you're linking out. And it's true.
So be careful that your outbound links are not more than your inbound links.
