Guests posting, also known as guest blogging is publishing your article (s) on another blog or website for the purpose of getting backlinks and promoting your blog to the site's audience with the overall purpose of increasing blog traffic.

Benefits of Guests Posting

  • Get exposure for you and your blog or website.
  • Brand yourself in your niche.
  • Build relationships with the author of the site and his or her readers.
  • Increase your feedburner subscribers.
  • Drive traffic to your blog.
  • But its strongest benefit especially for a new site is building high quality backlinks .

It's almost impossible to find a site that will be willing to link to yours when you're just starting out. So instead of waiting on link swapping sit down and write a good article on an interesting topic on your niche and you'll not just get a link from an authority site to yours but you'll get a one way link.

If an authority site (a popular site in your niche) links to your blog it holds a strong weight with the search engines and in the long run will help the page ranking and popularity of your blog in the engines, especially if you use an anchor text link (keyword backlinks) to link from the site to yours.

Authority sites welcome guest posts because it's a win win. You give them free quality content for their site, they give you a link back to your site and expose you to their readers.

You can also get good traffic from it but don't do this for the traffic. What you want here is the link to your blog. Your paramount goal for your blog is to have it on the first page of the search engines, so you can start making money while you sleep as a result of the free traffic you'll be getting from them.

While I don't encourage guest post for traffic is because no matter how big the site is and how many traffic it gets, you can only really benefit from that traffic for the immediate few days after the article gets published, after which you should expect just few traffic (if any) other days.

The reason for this is that as new posts are been published on the site, your article is getting more and more down the folds. But your backlink (s) remains.

Tips for Successful Guest Posting

Have at least 20 high quality article pages on your blog (more is better) before starting, because no top blogger will take you seriously and accept your article on his or her site if you only have few or very low quality articles on your blog.

The article you write for guest post must be of high quality and uncommon. Make it irresistible that it's hard to refuse. This is because really popular niche sites are very selective of the kind of article they publish on their site.

Follow the guidelines the author has set out for a guest post on his or her site.

Sites accepting guest posts usually have a page where they spell out the do's and don't of it. And how to submit the article to them. But where there is none and you are interested in publishing on the site, contact the blogger using his or her contact form, including the article you wish to publish on his or her site in the mail.

Make sure you are allowed to have at least one anchor text link to your blog in the article else the primary purpose, which is to build high quality backlinks will be defeated.

If you are allowed to have one link in your byline then link to your home page. If you are allowed to have two, link to your home page and your feedburner email subscription. That way if your article is interesting and offers value, you'll have people subscribing to your blog updates from that site.

If you are allowed to have a link within the article, find an important keyword based content that relates to your guest post article and link to it. This is known as deep linking and it helps that page of your blog and the overall blog.

Make sure the site you guest post on has a good number of regular comments. Check some of the site's posts to see how many comments they have. The more comments the better. I actually judge a good site for guest post by the number of comments it gets. Forget page rank, forget alexa ranking, a site that has a strong community around it most definitely will pass on the other factors.

And you also want to keep in mind it will be difficult to create exposure for yourself and your blog if a site doesn't have a strong community.

How to find Authority Sites to Guest Post on

You can simply go to Google and type in your "keyword" with a quote and then visit the sites on the first page of Google for that keyword to see if you like the kind of content they offer and if they accept guest posts.

Or use the free SearchIt! tool to check for authority sites through relevance and popularity.

Go to SearchIt! on step one, select "Blog/RSS search". For step 2 select "Google Blog search" and in step 3 enter your keyword then click searchIt!

To check how many traffic a site gets (popularity of a site), choose popularity from the drop down menu of step one of searchIt!, then in step 2 choose which of the popularity tool you'll like to use, Quantcast,Alexa ranking e.t.c. and enter the website address on step 3. Then click Searchit!

I have use guest posting to get some top related sites in my niche to link to my new site which wouldn't have been possible otherwise. And remember that high quality backlinks are links from authority related sites to yours which uses your specific keywords in the links.

Keep in mind that you are doing it for the direct link benefit not direct traffic. The direct traffic benefit should be a plus.

Should you Give Your Best Article for Guest Posting or Publish it on your Blog?

After writing an article for a guest post, you may be tempted to hold on to it and publish it on your blog because you think it's too good to give away. But keep in mind that it makes no sense to have the best article on your blog with no one to read it.

And link building is very essential if you hope to win the search engines in the nearest future especially when they come from related authority sites. If you consider the time you waste sending emails to webmasters for link exchanges that never get response, then giving some high value articles away would be worth it.

Do not focus on building backlinks through this method and forget to publish articles on your own blog. Remember that it's best to diversify your link building methods. Some link from here and some from there.

Guest posting when done properly is one of the best quick ways to raise a new blog's link popularity and reputation.
