How to promote a blog or how to promote my blog is one of the most asked questions online and for a good reason.
Whatever your goal is for starting a blog, whether to blog for fun by sharing what interests you with people, to promote your business or services or to make money blogging, you can only achieve it if you are able to get a high number of blog traffic.
That is all it boils down to really. The difference between a problogger earning several thousands of dollars and the beginner earning zero dollar, and wondering when or if he/she will achieve same result.
Traffic rules the internet which is why there will continue to be new articles written on it.
How to promote your blog and move from zero traffic to thousands?
You don't wait to set up a blog and have some articles on it before you start planning for traffic. You plan for it before setting up a blog.
In the previous article:
How to Increase Blog Traffic : Effective Blog Promotion Strategies
I looked into those areas and what you should know about web traffic that will prepare you on how to build good number of targeted traffic.
When you have some good number of content in your blog, start seeding your traffic.
There's hardly anyone that pays attention to a request for blog promotion through link exchange from a new blog. So I would suggest you don't waste your time contacting fellow bloggers for link request or anything of sort.
Write really good content (this is extremely important) then use the following ways discussed immediately below to seed your first few traffic.
Encourage your friends and family members to visit your blog and tell you what they think about your articles by leaving a comment (s).
If you send out mail regularly, include your blog address in your snail mail signature. It could be gmail, yahoo or hotmail. Don't forget to add a little description of your blog.
Write an e-book and give it for free download on your blog. It doesn't have to be long. I have read e-books less than 20 pages.
The value is not in the number of pages but in the value it offers. So make the information in your e-book really helpful.
Get creative, find a way to make it unique. And don't ask for email opt-in before it can be downloaded, you'll have enough time to build your list. For now your goal is to get your name and blog address out there.
Or better still write two free ebooks. One to build your list, and the other to give for free download without an opt-in request.
So offer a value-packed downloadable e-book for free, no strings attached. And in the e-book encourage people to pass it on to their friends and loved ones.
If possible you could even offer to give some form of bonus for doing that.
Think this through and see what you can come up with.
If you do it right, you'll have people promoting your blog daily, sending high number of targeted traffic to your blog. And in a short time too. There's no better way to do word of mouth marketing.
Install and display a social media icon such as addthis widget below your blog post that will allow people to spread your article in popular social media sites.
Or simply use a facebook and twitter plugin which are the most popularly used social media sites.
To encourage people to promote your blog and content you must write interesting and value-packed content. And also add a request below your articles encouraging readers who enjoyed your content to pass it forward. And explain how they can do so.
To be recognized in your niche, you have to reach out and communicate with fellow bloggers.
And one of the best ways to do this is to follow their activities in related online communities such as MMO Social network for those in niches such as blogging, make money online and Internet marketing.
For both sites you are allowed to submit your articles and network with other bloggers.
To benefit in traffic and branding from online communities you should be reasonably active. Submit attractive headlines and value-packed content, read others content, vote for them and tweet them if you find them valuable.
When tweeting use @the blogger's twitter name before the post link.
Make sure you don't put too much effort doing this though, because you could get carried away and forget to do what is most important - 90% of your efforts should go into providing content for your blog since it is still new.
If you spend 60% of your time chasing traffic for a blog that has just 30 pages, then you would get visitors down only to have them leave almost as they came for lack of enough quality content.
As a beginner with a new blog it is essential you promote each article you write, if not your articles will just sit there with no one reading them.
If you use Wordpress blog you already do some form of promotion automatically through your Wordpress feed. And you can take it further. See how from the article:
How to increase backlinks with RSS directories
Install a twitter plugin that publishes your blog post automatically on your twitter account as you publish them.
To maximize traffic from publishing your blog posts links as updates on twitter, mix up your links with links of other people's articles you find interesting.
Or a tip about your niche every now and then that your followers will appreciate.
Look for some blogs related to your niche with the commentluv plugin and that publishes content regularly and subscribe to them.
Then after publishing a post on your blog, visit those blogs and leave a meaningful comment. The commentluv plugin will automatically pick your most recent blog post and add it below your comment.
To maximize this method of getting traffic to your blog, write a comment that adds value to the article and write attractive headlines for your articles.
If you apply the above methods of getting traffic properly, you can be sure of getting 100 daily blog visitors.
But for your blog to be successful and profitable you need hundreds and thousands of daily visitors.
How do you move from 100 visitors to several hundreds and thousands?
The following ways below will skyrocket your web traffic but only when done consistently over time.
If your goal is to make money blogging then it is very important that you work on ranking on the first page of Google for most of your targeted keywords. This is the most converting traffic for any niche.
Unlike traffic from other sources that just come to digest your content and leave, or most of social traffic who are just surfing the web for fun and not really interested in your content, you're almost sure that visitors from the search engines will contribute to your overall blogging goal.
Either subscribing to your blog updates, newsletter, leaving a comment, clicking on an ad, or buying a product or service you recommend.
Why? because they came looking for you through the search engines. They have a purpose to achieve when they type your keyword into the search engines. And you can be almost certain that they will achieve that purpose when they visit your site.
Moreover (and this is also important), when you start ranking on the first page of Google for most of your keywords then you wouldn't have to put much effort to get decent traffic to your blog.
This is where you can be sleeping and your blog still makes money for you. This is every webmaster's goal online.
It wouldn't happen overnight but it will happen eventually if you work at it right.
In my previous article on blog promotion (link above) I discussed in detail how to work the search engines.
I am not a SEO pro, but I know enough that I have been able to put this site on the second page of Google for my primary keyword (blogging for beginners) as at writing this post and this site is just some months old.
So forget all the so called Pro SEOers out there, it's something anyone can do if you have the right information from beginning, because a lot of things contribute to ranking on the first page of Google.
Aside from the search engines there are other ways to increase blog traffic, but some of these ways do not bring consistent traffic. You can get 1000 from them today and tomorrow you get zero.
So the days you get high traffic from them enjoy it and when you don't, look forward to the day it will come again.
