Social bookmarking is a good way to build backlinks and improve your search engine ranking if you know what you're doing.

This is when people surf the web to find pages that interest them, organize those pages on the web using tags and share with their friends.
To record success online whether as a blogger, Internet marketer or the likes, high ranking in search results for your targeted keywords is extremely important.
To achieve that your site and pages have to meet the credibility assessment factors of the search engines or what is called SEO, of which building backlinks is one of the critical factors.
It's almost like who has the most quality and authority backlinks dominates the search engines. Though now Google, one of the biggest search engines with its new change is emphasizing on quality in-depth content.
But even at that, backlinks I believe will still be as important.
Webmasters are constantly looking into various ways of building backlinks especially one way links which carries more weight when it's from authority related sites.
Social bookmarking has become a very good tool to use to get lots of backlinks to a site and its pages.

When using social networks except for sites where you can start a group to gather targeted readers, traffic shouldn't be the focus rather helping your site and pages rank high in the search engines for your keywords.
This is simply because most social network traffic can't be converted to cash. They are just people looking for free information to read and may not do something as little as clicking on an ad on your site.
How to Use Social Bookmarks to get Backlinks
You register to a social bookmark site, set your preferences, install toolbar and start browsing through web pages to find content of interest to you.
You either browse through the pages others have bookmarked or you can bookmark to the site any pages of interest you find while surfing the web.
It doesn't improve your site or pages search ranking to register and start bookmarking all your site pages because the IP address of the pages bookmarked are attached to the bookmarks.
So several bookmarking coming from a particular IP address will not get any SEO juice. That means your backlinks will be worth nothing.
Just bookmarking one or two of your pages also does your site little to no good. To see the benefits of backlinks from social bookmarking you have to get lots of links.
One of the effective ways to achieve that is to network with friends on social bookmark sites who have same topic preferences as you so that they'll always find your bookmarks interesting enough to spread the link.
First though you must make sure you have good content that will interest people enough to want to bookmark it. To keep things real you can bookmark one of your pages for every 40-50 other pages you make.
Keeping link building real with social bookmarking is very time consuming. I tried it but couldn't keep up with it. But if it doesn't require much of your time it is a good way to diversify your backlinks.
Some people are now forming groups of common interest in other to reduce the amount of time that creating backlinks with social bookmarks takes.
It's a group simply about bookmarking each other's content. One of such networks is Socialbookmarking 101. It's a membership site I found recently that I think is worth considering.
As a member you get home works and assignments once a week that takes you one hour to complete. The home works are links of other members pages for you to bookmark. As you are bookmarking other members pages others are bookmarking yours as well.

Tips to Creating Quality Unique Backlinks with Social Bookmarking
When bookmarking your pages, vary your submission details such as description, keywords and tags.
Ensure the social bookmark sites you use are do-follow.
Do not regularly bookmark your own pages. Or if you do make sure you bookmark others pages 2-3 times more than you bookmark yours.
Automate your Bookmarking with Bookmarking icons
Add a bookmarking icon to your site and let people spread your content and build backlinks for you.
Though this is not too reliable because your content really has to be of high quality and sometimes uncommon before people will click on the icon to bookmark it.
And even if you provide high quality content, most people are just too much in a hurry to want to spare the time to bookmark a page.
But I still recommend it. First because you have nothing to lose by just adding it to your pages. And secondly because even if it's just one person that uses it to spread your content in a year, it's still something.
Addthis widget is a good tool to use. It let's you add most of the popular bookmarking sites to your pages without taking much space.
If someone wants to see more sites he or she simply click on More. Aside that you have access to statistics of the pages people are bookmarking.
