No you do not necessarily have to help people to make money online but you better have something of value or highly usable or adaptable to offer instead. Be it an actual product tangible or intangible, an idea, a workable plan, a blue print, etc...
IMO, in order to get the click that makes the sale and to remain successful at continuing getting the click, you need to have something of value to offer in return for $$$ received. If your product, whatever it may be, does not hold up to the perceived value, you may snare a few unwary buyers, but your long-term return is little to non-existing.
